Sushi 101

Sushi News:

Central Market Cooking School is back in the sushi teaching business. They've located a new instructor and it's none other than Tim Thomas of Origami (one of our faves here at austinsushi.com). He teaches his first class on July 17, and ...... it's not sold out yet. Hard to believe...

Love Seafood? So do we........

Sushi News:

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program helps people choose seafoods that are "good for you and good for the oceans". You can download their free seafood card that lists regional seafoods and when to avoid them. Only their "West Coast" regional card is currently available, but it's still useful for Texas.

Their pitch: "Love seafood, so do we. And we like to know that it's caught or farmed in ways that support a healthy environment. Sadly, some of our favorite fish are disappearing. But other great seafoods are doing fine.

Sushi News:

We now have a new column that debuts with a stunning three-part sushi crawl that takes the reader on a perilous eleven hour journey through the heart of Austin's sushi industrial complex. "La Vida Sushi" is the name of Jeremy Kraybill's new column. He and his cohorts periodically binge on sushi and live to tell about it.

Competition Heats Up On 183

Sushi News:

With the opening of a sushi bar inside of Kobe Japanese Steakhouse (http://www.kobeaustin.com ), the corner of 183 and Anderson Mill Road has become an all-out sushi melee with Kobe joining Osaka on the Southwest corner, and Midori on the Northeast corner. Is there sufficient business to sustain them all? Only time will tell.

And Speaking Of 183....
Various Austin Sushi News readers have pointed out that there's an "Iron Chef" sign up on a location currently under remodel at the Southwest corner of 183 and Burnet Road. Anyone with a clue about this new venue, please drop us a line (mailto:we

The Sushi Seals Will Take America By Storm!

Sushi News:

...or so their web site would lead you to believe.

The Sushi Seals Family is a wildly popular animated series in Japan about a family of, well, sushi seals. They look sort of like seals, but also like pieces of sushi (see the web site for a picture). The web site sez: "The sushi seals are a happy seal family that lives in today's times. The concept behind The Sushi Seals Family is Teletubbies meets South Park."

Two New Sushi Bars!

Sushi News:

That's right kids. Two new sushi bars have opened, Sushi Niichi and Dragon Gate (thanks to Ed for the tip). Both are relatively small, but nicely appointed, sushi bars. Sushi Niichi is the University area's first real sushi bar and it's located right next to our favorite bubble tea and Sanrio outlet, Momoko (http://momoko.citysearch.com ). Dragon Gate, located in Westlake next to Breed and Company, has a sushi bar, a comprehensive menu of Chinese food, and even a couple of Teppanyaki tables

Check Out The ASS

Sushi News:

That's the Austin Sushi Society, dude. The Austin Sushi Society's sushi social event occurs on roughly the first Wednesday of each month at a different sushi bar.

The Austin Sushi Society was formed by Holly Jackson in February, 2002, and has grown to become a large, and somewhat wild, event.

According to their Evite.com invite for the event:

"Come chow down with our friendly, upscale ASS which is more about mingling with fun folks than just eating together!"
